Up up and away

From time to time I like to gloat about some of my picks. Today is a great day for that.

TODAY

XEC +2.51
SLB +2.6%
HAL +3.34%
GW +2.7%
ECA +3.06%

UNFORTUNATELY I had also picked NWAC which is down 5% today. But the entire transpotation industry has fallen the past couple of days.

I will probably buy PENN today if the storm completely dies down.

Two new stocks

Jim's new picks today were:

Capstone Turbine Corp. (CPST)
Penn National Gaming Inc. (PENN)
Now the first one he says to buy when its below or near $4.00 again. So $4.60 is a bit expensive.
This PENN deal maybe huge. I'll leave it up to you to do the research but they have a big take over deal ... which if it happens (which it will) will be really huge for them.

I'll be buying both of those sometime this week, but probably not tomorrow.

Oil it up

It always raises a lot of eyebrows when someone see the positive in catastrophe. But I have to point out the positive side of today's storm. There was unbelievable damage done to the oil refineries today. Three companies I can think of will definitely profit from today. They will be the companies that rebuild all this damage.

HAL - Haliburton
GW - Grey Wolf
SLB - Schlumberger

I own all three of these positions and please, if you make a ton of money on these don't forget to send me a bottle of expensive wine.

T

Day late

I told some of you about BTU over the weekend and late last week. This company is the number one Coal player in the US and is likely to remain that way. Remember that 80% of our energy needs are still supplied by Coal so its not going anywhere. I wish I would have written this last Friday as its up tremendously today.
Also, MSO (Martha Stewart). Keep and eye on this one. I think they will have a great quarter.

Siriusly Early

I know it seems that all the news I have for you lately is regarding Sirius but this one can't be neglected. The Howard Stern Channel on Sirius may launch as early as September 29, according to Bear Stearns ( via Forbes.com) even though he isn't actually slated to join the company until January 2006. Such a move would give his successor at Infinity Broadcasting time to build a ratings book that Infinity could use to sell advertising inventory for Q1 2006, the article says. This could be huge for Sirius. And Howard better be rolling sevens on the come out or this ship will sink faster than you can say titanic.

Siriusly Mobile

Big news today from Sirius Sat., which I own a ton of. They came out with the "first wearable satellite radio, with MP3/WMA file capability." They are calling the unit, the Sirius S50, and it is expected to launch for retail in October. Keep in mind that Howard Stern starts broadcasting on Sirius starting January. Now Sirius only has about 1.5 Million subscribers (compared with XM's nearly 3 M). Now those numbers are somewhat diluted on both their parts since new cars now come with 1 year's free subscription. So its all bullshit. But remember Howard Stern has 18 Million devoted listeners. More than any other radio show. A lot of those people will follow him into Satellite Radio. Not sure if that will justify his $100M/yr contract but it does show opportunity for growth. And remember the only thing Wall Street cares about. GROWTH!! http://prn.newscom.com/cgi-bin/pub/s?f=PRN/prnpub&p1=20050825/NYTH029- for some pix of the new player.

Are you Diversified?

unless you have at least one position in each of the categories then you may not be:
  • Oil and Gas
  • Basic Materials
  • Industrials
  • Consumer Goods
  • Health Care
  • Consumer Services
  • Telecommunication
  • Utilities
  • Financials
  • Technology

And to be truly diversified you need to be spread across them pretty evenly. And remember to always buy best of breed.

NWAC

Thats right, I said it, Northwest Airlines (NWAC for you home gamers)!
I know I said I would never buy a transportation stock. And I know I said I would certainly never buy an airline stock cause they always suck. And I know I said I would never buy a stock that is inversely tied to oil prices. With all that said, I just placed an order to but 600 shares of NWAC. Why? Because I believe in this stock and more importantly, because it was upgraded to "outperform":

"Today Bear Stearns upgraded Northwest Airlines Corp. to outperform from market perform, saying it believes the shares are pricing in the uncertainty surrounding a potential mechanics strike this weekend and service disruptions. The broker told clients that in its view the risk/reward balance has now turned favorable and added that Northwest is the only legacy airline that has not received concessions after Sept. 11 and has some of the highest unit labor costs in the industry."

Now lets cross those fingers and see how much money we can make here. All I am looking for is really about $1 (lol).

Also, great news. You don't HAVE to get these emails anymore. The posts are automatically posted to my new blog called DollarOne.

You can find it at:  http://dollarone.blogspot.com

I'll be updating that site when I get a chance to make it more informative.

Google Talk Part 2

Okay so as I said before Google Talk is out and people already have some opinions.
Here is what you need to know:

1) No frills at all
2) Not great for text chat
3) Very good voice talk capability
4) Easy download, easy install, must have gmail account
5) Jabber Compatible (don't ask what this is if you don't know)

But here is the big thing, apparently Google is in talks with Earthlink and Sippphone to "establish compatibility with their voice services."
And so far the reaction is pretty negative. I would not want to hold GOOG right now or for the next week or so.

On the other hand I already told you about my only pick today LGF. I see good things happening here.

Go Oil !!!
