Get Sirius about investing

Great article today about Sirius:

Fans following Stern to his new Sirius home

Shock jock's move to satellite radio spurs holiday-sales boom, stores say

Cabbage Patch Kids, Furby, the Xbox 360. Add Howard Stern to the list of Christmas gifts with a following that made them difficult, if not impossible, to find at the height of their popularity.

The aging, crass shock jock who ruled mornings on FM radio in Boston and elsewhere until last Friday, takes his act to Sirius Satellite Radio, the number-two player in the subscription radio business, on Jan. 9. Judging by the shelves at some local retailers, he's taking a lot of Boston fans with him.

Several store managers said Sirius receivers, which cost between $50 and $300, come with a $12.95 monthly fee, and have to be plugged into a car or home stereo, are among their hottest sellers this holiday season. Stern fans and their gift-buying relatives are cleaning out shelves as quickly as they are stocked with new units.

''This is driving our revenue right now," said Anthony Perry, a manager at Best Buy in the Fenway neighborhood. ''If we could stock a million of these, I'm sure we'd sell a million," added general manager Gary Oliveira.

Great Buying Day

It seems that the powers that be have granted us another day to pick up some much needed positions. I personally have stocked up on some more SIRI today and looking into picking up some more LWSN by the end of the day. Al thought I have to say that the LWSN decline is due to some shady news of a merger push back so I would not recommend getting into it head first. Another great deal today is Natural gas. I would say depending on how cold you think this weekend is going to be, this one could be your best pick. And keep in mind, its coming to the point (probably early next week) that the natural gas bills are going to arrive at your mailbox and the first peek the consumer will have into the rising prices. Merry Christmas indeed.

Fed Loosens Hold on Rates

Well it looks like the Fed finally let go of its quest to crush the housing market for a while. Stocks got a healthy jump today and all my natural gas prophecies seem to be coming to fruition.
By the way, for those of your who use Ameritrade like I do, I am sure you already no this but placing a "Trailing Stop" order is about the safest way to trade and it guarantees that you don't lose any more money than you expected. Its the only way I am going to trade from now on.

Have a good one.

PortalPlayer shelves stock offering
Shares up as company also hints at entering new market

Data provided by

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- PortalPlayer Inc. rose nearly 14% Friday as the supplier of chip and software components for portable music players yanked plans for a secondary stock offering and signaled it expects to enter a new product segment early next year.
San Jose, Calif.-based PortalPlayer (PLAY) cited market conditions as the reason for postponing the proposed sale of 4.5 million additional shares.
The stock's been down about 24% since the offering was announced Oct. 24 but recouped some of those losses in trading Friday. The stock jumped $2.93 to close at $24.17.
The company also said that it may rejuvenate the stock sale in the future and that its diversification strategy remains on track. Management plans to evaluate small acquisitions to expand PortalPlayer's product line.
Chris Chaney, an analyst at Stanford Group Co., which rates the stock a buy, said pulling the offering indicates the company "was not desperately seeking an acquisition to continue its growth and that prospects continue to be bright" in the near term.
PortalPlayer is heavily dependent on sales of Apple Computer Inc.'s popular iPod music player, with more than 90% of its revenue coming from Apple ( AAPL).
PortalPlayer, whose chips and software decode and process programs for digital music players, has hinted at branching into the components market for mobile phones.
In a press release issued late Thursday, Chief Executive Gary Johnson said the company expects to enter "an additional major market segment for our products" during the first quarter of 2006.
The company declined to comment beyond its prepared statement.
An announcement is expected to be made at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas during the first week of January.
With the stock sale shelved, PortalPlayer said it expects fourth-quarter earnings per share in the range of 37 cents to 47 cents, based on 26.2 million weighted average shares outstanding.

GOOG vs. MSFT

Who would have thought these two would be fighting over a POS like AOL but here they go. I personally can't believe that GOOG would sink so damn low but I think the best strategy would be to drive the price up for MSFT so high that it would end up hurting them. Knowing that MSFT will go to any length to win any battle over GOOG these days this should be pretty fun to watch. I would buy some AOL stock either way though.
